The Jack Cassidy Award for Scholarly Contributions

Nominations Deadline: March 15, 2022
Awarded: Annually

Description: In 1988 Dr. Jack Cassidy founded the Specialized Literacy Professionals (SLP), a special interest group of the International Literacy Association (ILA). Over the years, his annual What’s Hot in Literacy survey has guided literacy professionals and organizations, including SLP,  in identifying current trends and issues in the field of literacy and is recognized as a significant scholarly contribution. Initially formed to be a one-time survey, the What’s hot survey has developed into a longitudinal study documenting literacy trends and issues of the past and present.

In recognition of Dr. Cassidy’s service to SLP and his scholarly contributions to the field of literacy through the What’s Hot in Literacy survey, SLP annually recognizes the authors of one scholarly publication with the Jack Cassidy Award for Scholarly Contributions. Chosen scholars are recognized for their scholarship of timely (i.e., HOT) topics and the potential impact their scholarship may have on specialized literacy professionals.

Qualifications:
  • The recipients must be a member of ILA and SLP.
  • The recipients' contributions should reflect timely (i.e., published within the awarded year) topics and a potential to impact specialized literacy professionals.

To nominate authors of one scholarly publication, please send an email to Evan Ortlieb, Chair of the Awards Committee, at eortlieb@citadel.edu
